The short version
We run group charters between Texas cities — Houston to Austin, San Antonio, Dallas and the college towns in between. Anything past our standard one-hour service area is quoted per itinerary with the extra drive time built in, days running past roughly 12 hours add a second driver or lodging, and once the drive tops two or three hours a coach beats a party bus.
US-290 out of Houston is where a road trip stops being a plan and starts being a test. Four cars, one Buc-ee's outside Waller, one missed exit, and by eleven in the morning the caravan is in three pieces, none of them sure who has the cooler. Everybody arrives, eventually, in three different moods.
That's the trip this page is about — the ones that leave one Texas city for another. A bachelor weekend that starts here and ends on Sixth Street. A church group in San Antonio for two days. Forty alumni pointed at Kyle Field. A company shifting a team from Dallas to a client in Austin. These run on different rules from a night out, because distance changes the price, the hours stack up faster than anyone guesses, and the right vehicle is frequently not the one with the dance pole in it.
How long these drives really take
Below are honest door-to-door times for a bus or a coach between city centers, outside rush hour. Friday afternoons, holiday weekends, and game days push every one of them longer.
| Route | Main highway | Distance (approx.) | Typical time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Houston to Austin | US-290 | 165 miles | 2 hr 45 min–3 hr 15 min |
| Houston to San Antonio | I-10 | 200 miles | 3–3 hr 30 min |
| Houston to Dallas | I-45 | 240 miles | 3 hr 45 min–4 hr 15 min |
| Austin to San Antonio | I-35 | 80 miles | 1 hr 15 min–1 hr 45 min |
| Austin to Dallas | I-35 | 195 miles | 3–3 hr 30 min |
| San Antonio to Dallas | I-35 | 275 miles | 4 hr 30 min–5 hr |
| Houston to College Station | US-290 and SH 6 | 95 miles | 1 hr 45 min–2 hr |
| Houston to Galveston | I-45 | 50 miles | 1 hr–1 hr 15 min |
| Houston to Beaumont | I-10 | 85 miles | 1 hr 30 min–1 hr 45 min |
Per mile, I-35 is the worst of the bunch. Construction through Austin and the truck volume between San Marcos and New Braunfels make the Austin to San Antonio leg genuinely unpredictable on a Friday, whatever a mapping app promises you the night before. Our drivers pull up TxDOT's DriveTexas map for closures and incidents before they roll out.
The hours add up faster than the map suggests
Here's the mistake almost everyone makes on a first long trip. They book the drive and forget the rest of the day exists. A round trip from Houston to a game in Austin is six hours behind the wheel before a single person has walked through a stadium gate. Add a tailgate, a four-hour game window, and the crawl back out of the parking lot, and you've sailed past 12 hours without trying.
Where the twelve-hour line falls
Once a day runs longer than roughly 12 hours, it needs a second driver or an overnight room for the first one. That isn't a fee we invented — federal hours-of-service rules cap how long a commercial passenger driver can drive and stay on duty, and our quotes are built around that cap. You'll see it as its own line, priced before you commit, never tacked on afterward. Here's where the usual trips land:
| Trip | Rough total | Second driver or lodging? |
|---|---|---|
| Houston to Galveston beach day | 7–9 hours | No |
| Houston to College Station day game | 10–12 hours | Sometimes, if kickoff is late |
| Houston to Austin night game, same-day return | 13–15 hours | Yes |
| Houston to Dallas for a game, same-day return | 14–16 hours | Yes |
| Two-day San Antonio weekend | Two separate days | Driver lodging for the night |
When the trip runs overnight
On a multi-day booking the vehicle simply stays with your group. The driver sleeps at a hotel near yours so they're rested for the next morning, and we quote each day's hours alongside that lodging so the whole picture is in front of you at once. Send the full itinerary when you ask, including where everyone is sleeping.
Once the highway leg passes two or three hours, a full-size motorcoach is the steadier ride.
Coach or party bus, once the drive is three hours
Either one will physically make the trip. They're just good at opposite halves of it.
| Party bus | Coach bus | |
|---|---|---|
| Seating | Perimeter benches facing inward | Forward-facing reclining seats |
| Best for | Arriving together with the party already going | Long stretches of highway, sleeping, working |
| Luggage | Limited, inside the cabin | Bays under the floor |
| Comfort past 3 hours | Tiring for most groups | Designed for it |
| Common sizes | 20–45 passengers | 36–56 passengers |
The arrangement that keeps groups happiest over a weekend is a split one: a 56-passenger charter coach or a 44-passenger coach bus for the highway legs, then a party bus or limo booked locally for the night out once you're there. When a group would rather keep one vehicle the whole way, a 45-passenger party bus manages it — you'll want more stops built in. An onboard restroom helps if the coach has one, so ask rather than assume, and plan the rest stops either way.
Inward-facing lounge seating on the 45-passenger bus — wonderful for the arrival, wearing after four hours.Texas polls: what would you do?

Stadiums, and what each one does to your morning
More Texas groups cross county lines for football than for anything else, and no two stadiums handle a chartered vehicle the same way.
- Kyle Field, College Station. Over 100,000 fans and a charter plan written by the university itself. The game-day timeline lives on our College Station page.
- Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium, Austin. Campus street closures mean your drop is several blocks out, so wear the shoes. The Austin page has the detail.
- Texas-OU at the Cotton Bowl, Dallas. Fair Park during the State Fair of Texas, with all the parking and traffic that implies. Covered on our Dallas page.
- Bowers Stadium, Huntsville. A much shorter run from the Houston side, laid out on the Huntsville page.
- Provost Umphrey Stadium, Beaumont. Lamar home games over on the east side, on the Beaumont page.
Kickoff times often aren't announced until one or two weeks out, which sounds like a planning problem and isn't. Reserve the date with a flexible block, then fix the pickup once the time drops. Stadium pickups in general are covered on our sporting events page.
A two-day weekend to San Antonio and the Hill Country
This shape of trip comes up constantly — a bachelorette weekend, a family reunion, a church group heading west for a couple of days:
| Day | Plan | Rough hours |
|---|---|---|
| Saturday | Leave Houston 9 AM, arrive San Antonio around noon, River Walk and dinner, back to the hotel by 10 PM | About 13 (second driver or split day) |
| Sunday | Hotel to a Fredericksburg-area winery tour, then home to Houston by evening | About 11 |
Saturday's driver stays near your hotel overnight, and that room shows up on the quote where you can see it. River Walk drop-offs and the routes west are on our San Antonio page.
Why a long trip is priced differently
We'd rather walk through this before you ask for a number than argue about it afterward. Whatever is in your quote is all-inclusive — vehicle, driver, fuel, mileage, taxes, driver gratuity, unlimited stops inside your booked hours, ice and bottled water. What a long trip changes is which things end up in there.
- Distance. Once a trip reaches beyond about an hour's drive from our base, it's priced as long-distance, with the additional drive time written into the quote rather than absorbed as local mileage.
- Hours. Long trips mean long blocks. You're paying for the whole stretch the vehicle and driver are committed to you, the drive out and the drive back included.
- Second driver or lodging. Days past the rough 12-hour mark, and any overnight, carry this — listed on its own so you can see what it costs.
- Overtime. Run past your booked hours and overtime starts after a 15-minute grace period, assuming the vehicle is free to stay out.

What we see in the numbers on long, big trips
Fair warning on the figures below. Our Houston inquiry data is drawn from requests around the Houston region rather than the whole state, so treat it as a guide and nothing firmer. About 11% of inquiries where hours were requested were for seven to eight hours, and out-of-town games and Galveston days account for most of that band. City-to-city charters sit there or well past it.
Groups on these trips also tend to be sizeable, and that's the part worth planning around. About 5% of inquiries with a group size were for 31 to 40 passengers — and vehicles that big are the scarcest thing in anyone's fleet. On money, about 18% of recorded historical quotes fell between $1,500 and $1,999, which is the band that goes with larger vehicles and longer hours. Those are past quotes rather than today's prices, and a multi-day itinerary can land above every band in the set.
Once you've got a number in hand, the planner turns it into a per-person figure and shows you which hours are driving it.

Where the city pages take over
Every city we cover keeps its own page, with the local pickups, venues, and drive times that don't belong on a statewide guide. For the Gulf Coast side, start at Houston, or go straight to Galveston if the island is the destination. Austin and San Antonio each have their own guide for Central Texas, and Dallas covers the north. College Station, Huntsville, and Beaumont handle game days and graduations in the college towns. Everything is indexed on the locations page.
